Odorhei software development summer internship has started! Summer is always an exciting period in Softech’s office in Odorheiu Secuiesc. While the sun is hot, the four students involved in our 2025 edition of the summer internship started their developer work on some cool projects! Participating in our Codespring Mentoring Programme throughout their second academic year at UBB Mathematics and Informatics Department, they already proved that they are committed to make a little extra effort in order to start their career as a software developer.

Although this year many companies found it challenging to organize their summer internship, the students involved in the Mentoring Programme still earned the privilege of working under the guidance of our dedicated mentors this summer. Over more, they can rely on the technical support of our senior developers until they defend their thesis next summer.

Summer Internship Brings to Life Fresh Tech Ideas

This time, four students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Babeș-Bolyai University decided to join our team in the Odorheiu Secuiesc (Székelyudvarhely) office between the 14th of July and 19th of September. Their summer internship started in an exciting way: during their first day they met with their mentors, attended a time management training, then they finished the day with a pizza party, together with their senior mentors. Not only they were curious about the actual state and challenges of the IT field, or about the possibilities of a software developer’s career, but also they came up with constructive project plans. One of the two application projects were suggested by our students, therefore they can dedicate their summer internship to developing their own ideas.

Practical Project Themes

This year, our interns and mentors will work together on two exciting and challenging topics:

Beekeeping Application: Based on the idea of our summer intern, this application helps beekeepers manage their apiaries. It allows them to record information about their hives, such as feeding and medication schedules, as well as the collection of honey, pollen, and other products. The app can also provide statistics, statements, and tutorials. The final solution will be revealed in September!

Digital Healthcare Diary: The mobile app allows parents to accurately and efficiently record their children’s symptoms during common illnesses, track disease progression, and present symptom timelines to doctors. The app allows users to manage multiple children’s data simultaneously, track medication, and share profiles. The actual resolution of these requests, will be presented at the end of the internship!

Promising First Impressions

After the first two active days of their summer internship, the students gave us a really positive feedback about the start and their first impressions. They appreciated the warm welcome they experienced at their arrival, and also the atmosphere seemed very pleasant to them.

One of the students, Cz. Norbert said he was impressed by the comfortable space where they can work with their team and rest when needed. During his summer internship, he is looking forward to gaining insight into developing a real product, getting experience in teamwork, and, of course, improving his programming skills. “I know I can ask experienced people for help now, and I will take advantage of that!” – he added.

According to Szilamér, “the mentors are very nice, and I think we will work well together”. He really enjoyed the first day of their Scrum traning: “It was an exciting challenge that allowed me to practice teamwork, time management, meeting deadlines, and delivering demos.

About the expectations for this summer internship, P. Norbert said: “The focus is on teamwork, which is useful because there have been fewer opportunities like this at university so far. I expect to work more confidently, even in a team; become more familiar with basic development processes; gain practical experience; improve my communication skills; and, finally, achieve results by the end of the summer in terms of acquired knowledge or an almost ready state exam.

This summer, I hope to experience what it’s like to work in a team, learn new skills, and develop new, lasting relationships within the office. I’m also aiming to become more goal-oriented, and yesterday’s time management presentation helped a lot with that. But I also want to put what I learned into practice during the summer” – added V. Norbert.

Enthusiastic Start Of The Teamwork

As one of our mentors, Hunor stated, „every year, we at Softech begin the summer internship with great enthusiasm, knowing how important it is for both the students and the company. For the students, this is the culmination of the mentoring programme. They can see the practical benefits of what they have learned, and they can also get a head start on their degree. It also gives us as mentors and the company an insight into the current academic curriculum and helps us discover potential future colleagues.

Change is frequent in our profession, and the same applies to the mentoring programme. Year after year, we encounter a variety of projects, technologies and ideas. But, above all, it is the students themselves who are different: each one is a unique individual with varying skills, experience, and personality. Nevertheless, our expectations remain similar each year, and we evaluate our common work consistently at the end of the summer. For me, the two most important aspects are the student’s attitude towards teamwork and their ability to adapt to change. In my experience, these are the best predictors of whether they will fit into our team in the long term.

Based on previous years, the effort invested by everyone is definitely worthwhile. Many of our existing colleagues started their careers with our summer internships, and we have had many excellent graduates.”

Benefits of The Summer Internship

Although the internship itself ends by the 19th of September, there are many advantages that our mentored students will continuously have access to:

  • The professional experience gained during the development of real projects with the active support of our seniors, as well as the developed soft skills during teamwork will really help them to stand out from the crowd of freshly graduated IT professionals.
  • The more actively they contribute to their project during these months and after the summer internship, the better results they will have during their state exam.
  • They will have access to the professional support of our dedicated mentors during students’ conferences and until finalizing their thesis, ensuring them better grade in the end.
  • Their proactive contribution to the work and their open-minded attitude might lead to invitation for a job interview after a successful graduation.
